Statue of BR Ambedkar vandalised in Uttarakhand

Hours after Union Home Ministry directed all state government to deal strictly with people demolishing statues of political leaders or ideological figures, miscreants demolished Dalit icon and leader Dr B R Ambedkar's statue in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut on Wednesday. BJP Chief Amit Shah also spoke to the party units in Tamil Nadu and Tripura and said any organisation person found involved in such vandalism will face severe action.Two statues of Communist icon Lenin were brought down in Tripura on Monday, two days after the BJP wrested the Left bastion. Both Sabroom and Belonia fall in South Tripura district. The incident, which the police claimed was perpetrated by two drunk men, assumed political significance as it came after a BJP leader indicated that statues of the rationalist leader could be the next to be pulled down after a statute of Communist icon Lenin was razed by suspected BJP workers in Tripura.

"The statue was damaged in the night". The police has arrested two people in the incident. Mukerjee was the founder of Jana Sangh that was the precursor of the Bharatiya Janata Party. "Similarly, I will also not accept the BJP's atrocities". The case was reported after a series of such incidents in Tripura, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.

"The recent issue on destroying of statues is extremely unfortunate". Mishra said the police rushed to the spot and pacified the irate residents.

Following the incident, members of the Dalit community here blocked the Meerut-Mawana road even as the administrative officials sought to calm down the protesters and assured them that the vandalised statue would be replaced with a new one.

Angered DMK workers took to streets in Chennai and burned effigies of Raja. Politician-turned-actor Kamal Hassan, said, "These recorded views on Periyar are very low and punishable by law, according to legal experts".
