Suffolk's Bill Turnbull opens up about cancer battle on Celebrity Bake Off

The former BBC Breakfast presenter, who shares two sons Henry and Will and one daughter Fiona with his wife Sarah, revealed: "I remember my daughter came and I said, "Well, I've got to tell you - I've got cancer".

However, the Channel 4 show dedicated the final minutes of its hour to Turnbull's story, in a short film in which he talked about his diagnosis and reflected on his life.

He hopes that by talking about his experiences, it'll help encourage other men to get tested for prostate cancer sooner, which is the most common form of cancer in United Kingdom men.

Turnbull explained that he mistook pains in his legs and hips - symptoms of the cancer - as old age.

Turnbull told his fans on Twitter: "I can confirm reports that I was diagnosed with prostate and bone cancer last November".

Speaking to the Radio Times, Turnball encouraged others to get tested, saying: "Maybe if I'd got it earlier and stopped it at the prostate, I'd be in a much better state".

'Those first few days were probably the worst days of my life.

Turnbull has undergone chemotherapy and jokes that his cocktail of drugs "leaves me looking not quite like the Adonis that you remember", but he says that despite his treatment "life is very liveable" and he continues to work.

"It's a hard time for him but he has an unbelievable, strong wife in Cesi, and a strong family - and he is saying this morning to all of you men of a particular age, please get your PSA levels checked", she went on.

The much-loved broadcaster said he was "cross with myself" for having prided himself on not visiting a GP in four years.

Doctors hope he will live for another 18 years.

He said: "The GP said, "It's clear you have prostate cancer and that it's spread to the bone". I've had a really marvellous time.

It is also the third deadliest cancer in the United Kingdom and the disease develops slowly, meaning many men don't know they have it for several years. He had prostate tests at 40 and 50 but with no cancer in his family "wasn't aware there was something going on inside me", despite experiencing aches and pains for a year or so. It wasn't a bad dream.

The earliest sign of prostate cancer is usually a problem with urinating, either needing to urinate more frequently, especially at night, or having an inconsistent flow when urinating. Only men can be affected by prostate cancer, as only men have a prostate gland.

"Anyone with any concerns can speak to Prostate Cancer UK's specialist nurses on 0800 084 8383 or visit prostatecanceruk.org".

The father of three also revealed the ordeal he went through when he was diagnosed.

The star, 60, had his prostate removed in January after being diagnosed in December.

The Classic FM host, 62, discussed the network of support he's had around him on Great Celebrity Bake Off.
