Geneva Motor Show 2018: Next-gen Toyota Auris breaks cover

The future of diesel cars overshadowed all the gleaming new metal unveiled on the opening day of the Geneva motor show.

Product plans beyond 2018 are unconfirmed, a spokesperson said, but the plans will involve phasing out the Avensis, Verso and diesel RAV4 - in the case of the latter, HEV sales outsell the petrol/diesel models two to one.

In the UK, Toyota sold 101,692 units previous year, of which hybrids made up 45,803 units - equating to 45%, similar to Europe.

Toyota has pulled the covers off its all-new Auris hatchback at the Geneva motor show, showing the world the auto that will go into production at its Burnaston factory in Derbyshire later this year.

The demand for HEV versions on its core models has influenced this move by Toyota.

Toyota has made a name for itself by offering hybrid power across its range - and the firm is going to ramp up its commitment to the technology with this new generation of Auris, which has made its debut at the Geneva show.

Toyota's distributors in Ireland registered 4,768 diesel cars past year. Toyota says that 90 percent of the vehicle's sales are hybrids.

Based on customer feedback the brand has chose to offer its core models with a choice of two hybrid electric powertrains. For more power there's a newly introduced 2.0-liter hybrid system, which offers "an "energised drive" with 180 hp (134 kW) - and even steering wheel-mounted paddles.

It added:'Toyota will continue to offer diesel engines in commercial vehicles- such as Hilux, Proace and Land Cruiser - to meet customer needs. In our latest new model, the Toyota C-HR, HEVs accounted for 78% of sales previous year.

Starting with the new generation Auris, this expanded HEV line-up is a natural reaction to their passenger vehicle customers' demands, Toyota insist.

"Diesel will be phased out in our passenger cars in 2018", Johan van Zyl, president of Toyota Motor Europe, said in Geneva, where Europe's first major vehicle show of the year opens this week.

Volkswagen is predicting diesel-powered vehicles will experience a boom in sales once people no longer care the German automaker affixed emission-cheating devices to its cars.
