Chicago Bears buy time, apply transition tag to cornerback Kyle Fuller

Why did the Bears give Fuller the transition tag?

Fuller is coming off a 2017-18 campaign in which he registered 68 total tackles, two interceptions and 22 pass defenses, the latter of which was good for second in the league.

Fuller has 159 tackles and eight interceptions in 48 career games with the Bears.

Fuller was a first-round pick of the Bears in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Although Amukamara has been a solid starter for the past six seasons, Fuller clearly was the better player in 2017.

The transition tag pays the average of the top 10 salaries at the position; the franchise tag, which was another option, pays the average of the top five players.

Under the transition tag, Fuller is free to negotiate with other teams, but the Bears have the right to match any offer he receives and keep him. The Miami Dolphins tagged him in the offseason, but declined to match an offer from the Buffalo Bills, losing Clay to a divisional rival.

That's bad news for Chiefs fans who wanted to see their favorite team bring in Kyle Fuller to play alongside his younger brother, Kendall Fuller, who was a primary part of the prize when they traded Alex Smith to Washington in January. After a resurgent 2017 season, Fuller is expected to draw significant interest on the free-agent market as one of the top available cornerbacks.

If Fuller stays in Chicago, he'll have another year working with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Fuller is the most important pending free agent for the team and keeping him would fill one of the major holes on the roster. He collected three interceptions and two forced fumbles in his first three games of his rookie season.
