Syrian Army Repels 3 Attacks on E Ghouta Humanitarian Corridor — Russian Military

Mr Abu Bashir said the shelling still struck civilians living in villages near the clashes.

Eastern Ghouta falls within a network of de-escalation zones endorsed by Turkey, Russia and Iran, in which acts of aggression are expressly prohibited.

"They are asking civilians to leave Eastern Ghouta on the false premise that they can then attack anyone left in the area as much as they would like", she said.

Kelley Currie, the USA ambassador for economic and social affairs, called a five-hour pause "cynical, callous, and in flagrant defiance of the demands" for a cessation of hostilities "for at least 30 days - every day, all day".

Since late February, Assad regime, Russian Federation and Iran-backed militia have intensified their attacks on the enclave, killing over 600 civilians as of Wednesday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Thursday of the 601 civilians, killed in mostly air strikes, 147 were children.

But the first day of a five-hour daily "pause" announced by Russian Federation was marred by fresh violence that saw at least two civilians killed by regime rocket fire. "One child died as a result", he said.

The eastern suburbs - a cluster of several towns and villages on Damascus' eastern edge - have faced a deadly and brutal onslaught for weeks by Syrian government troops, backed by Russian Federation. But the truce was marred by violence, with Moscow and Damascus accusing armed groups of shelling the purported humanitarian corridors and keeping the population hostage. After helping turn the tide of the war in Syria in favour of its ally President Bashar al-Assad, Russia has cast itself as a Middle East peace broker.

"They have been bombarding continuously and in some days they fire up to 80 shells and projectiles and in other times some of the shells hit the Russian embassy and the trade attache and we won't be patient regarding this situation". Shall we endlessly tolerate that? "Of course not", he said.

Residents of eastern Ghouta say they do not trust the Russia-declared truce and the United Nations and aid agencies have criticized the unilateral arrangement, saying it gave no guarantees of safety for residents wishing to leave. "More destruction. More, in other words, of the same", UN Undersecretary for Humanitarian Affairs Mark Lowcock told the Security Council on Wednesday.

"When will your resolution be implemented?" he asked.

USA representative Kelley Currie accused the regime of violating the ceasefire, while Russian ambassador Vassily Nebenzia blamed the rebels.

Lowcock finished his presentation with a question for the council: "When will your resolution be implemented?"

While diplomats at the United Nations wrangled over implementing the ceasefire, the regime was making a push for territory on the fringes of the besieged enclave.

A military officer at the deserted checkpoint said ground fighting on the edges of Eastern Ghouta, where most anti-regime fighters are deployed, may change the dynamic.

On Wednesday, the European Union demanded that Russia, Iran and Turkey take responsibility for ensuring that the fighting stops in Syria and that a real 30-day halt in fighting is respected.

Russian ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia said last week that the worldwide community was suffering from "mass psychosis" over the situation in eastern Ghouta.
