Kikkan Randall, Jessie Diggins Win Historic Gold Medal in Cross Country Skiing

Cross-Country Skiing - Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics - Women's Team Sprint Free Finals - Alpensia Cross-Country Skiing Centre - Pyeongchang, South Korea - February 21, 2018 - Jessica Diggins and Kikkan Randall of the USA celebrate.

"I just felt unstoppable, I'm in the best shape of my life right now for sure".

"It feels unreal, I can't believe it just happened", Diggins told reporters. Switzerland's Laurien van der Graaff, who along with her teammate Nadine Faehndrich came in fourth, praised the USA team.

"But if there's anybody I'd have 100 percent faith in coming down that finishing stretch as fast as possible, it's Jessie".

"So that was just a wonderful feeling to take it all in and watch it happen".

Randall may have been the underdog for many years, but the confidence of Diggins at these Games has ushered in a new era for the sport in America.

United States skier Jessie Diggins edges out Sweden's Stina Nilsson for the gold in women's team sprint freestyle. She missed the 2014 Sochi Games because of a strain in her lower back. She also was sixth in the classic sprint. "I'm very, very happy for Jessie and Kikkan today taking a gold medal", Bjorgen said. The Minnesota native is already the future of the sport in the US - but the medal held extra significance to her teammate, with Randall likely competing in her last Olympics. While finally winning a gold medal with Diggins in the team-sprint free final - after 18 tries throughout the Olympic competitions since Salt Lake City in 2002 - this was Randall's fifth and last Olympics, according to NPR.
