It's Confirmed! - Stars Will Wear Black At BAFTA Awards

"The Handmaiden" by South Korean director Park Chan-wook has picked up the trophy for the best non-English film at the 71st British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA).

The Cold War-era movie has 12 nominations, while crime drama "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" and "Darkest Hour", about British wartime leader Winston Churchill, each have nine. The red carpet this year at the Royal Albert Hall ceremony will be a sea of black as the movement against sexual misconduct takes centre stage at the BAFTAs.

Helmed by Stephen Frears, VICTORIA & ABDUL is based on a novel by Shrabani Basu.

The erotic thriller starring Kim Min-hee, Cho Jin-woong, Ha Jung-woo and Kim Tae-ri was in competition at the 69th Cannes Film Festival in 2016.

The U.S. -set film also won the best British film honours, qualifying on the basis of its creative team and the companies involved in producing it, many of whom are British. It also shows his journey on how he became one of the most powerful figures in the court. EE will be sponsoring the public vote for the rising star award, where Daniel Kaluuya of Get Out and 22-year-old Timothee Chalemet have been nominated.

"Three Billboards" won five awards, including best film, best actress for its lead performer Frances McDormand and a supporting actor award for Sam Rockwell.

"Darkest Hour" has also been nominated in the best film and outstanding British film categories, while Kristin Scott Thomas is up for supporting actress for her role as Churchill's wife Clementine. "I would like to thank people who financially support that".

"Three Billboards", the monster fantasy "The Shape of Water" and the World War II flag-waver "Darkest Hour" are front-runners for the British prizes, considered a key indicator of likely success at Hollywood's Oscars in two weeks' time.

Other notable winners included cinematographer Roger Deakins, who won for his work on "Blade Runner 2049".

British royals avoid making overtly political statements or gestures, so there was little suprise when the Duchess of Cambridge chose to wear a dark green dress, by British designer Jenny Packham, as she accompanied husband Prince William, president of Bafta, to the ceremony.

"A century ago, the Suffragettes laid the ground work for the kind of dogged resistance and powerful protest that has carried forward today with the Time's Up movement, and with it the determination to eradicate the inequality and abuse of women the world over", Lumley said.

Some actors brought along feminist activists rather than their partners or parents.

This week Britain's movie academy, industry unions and bodies announced new measures to tackle bullying and harassment, including better procedures for reporting and investigating abuse, a commitment to act against bullies and abusers, and a confidential support line.

James Ivory, who penned Call Me by Your Name, won the prize for Best Adapted Screenplay and the Best Animated Film award went to Coco.

In his acceptance speech, Scott praised his teachers for starting him on his journey. "Sort that out and social problems will get sorted out", he said.
