Woods commits to PGA Honda Classic

The tournament, at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, is near Woods' South Florida home.

Justin Thomas, 24, hitched a ride last week on Tiger Woods's private plane to the Genesis Open at Riviera Country Club. I drove it really nicely, which is what you have to do on this golf course.

Woods said after Friday's round that his knees were "a bit sore, but that's just all age". "Hit a lot of fairways, so I was able to give myself some good looks".

The raw numbers offer some clues.

I don't anticipate Woods winning this year's Genesis Open.

There he seemed to lose a majority of his tee shots to the right. No one shot better than 67 from the early side of the draw.

"My cut was not cutting, " he said. I have to go back and work on it. "I've got to clean up my card — too many bogeys out there".

This week, the missed fairways were joined by plenty of missed greens and putts.

A poor wedge that flew the green from 103 yards cost McIlroy a shot at the 11th but after pulling his 193-yard approach to the 12th to drop another shot, he was puffing out his cheeks after missing birdie chances inside 10 feet at the 13th and 16th. But he said he craved time in a competitive environment, which he sees as vital to elevating his game. He heard plenty of stories about his grandfather, Arnold Palmer, who first brought the masses to golf more than a half-century ago.

Woods will play at next week's Honda Classic.

Woods has made no further tournament commitments beyond next week. He's still figuring a few things out with equipment, I think, sort of in between drivers and whatever, but he's close. "So I had a couple times where I had a short putt, people are walking off, but that's a part of it". Everyone has to be patient with him, and most of all he has to be patient with himself'. "It's a good thing he's playing next week, just to get back at it".

Still, McIlroy suggested that not every missed shot was Woods' fault.

Clearly there is some perspective in order.

The last time Woods competed on consecutive weeks on the US Tour was the 2015 US PGA Championship and Wyndham Championship.

Unlike previous comebacks, Woods' expectations are tempered, and he seems prepared for dealing with the game's various setbacks.

"For her only child to go through the struggles was a little rough on her", Woods said, "so she's very proud of me getting back out there".
