Pakistani man sentenced to death in in rape, murder of girl, 7

On February 9, Imran was produced before ATC which chose to hold the trial in jail owing to security issues.

Imran Ali was handed capital punishment for kidnapping, rape, murder and an act of terrorism while a life sentence was also given to him for sodomy. He was also given a seven-year sentence and fined Rs1 million for desecrating the body of the girl.

Prosecutor General Ehtesham Qadir, who spoke to media after the sentencing, said the accused had been given ample chance to defend himself, but he chose to confess his crimes despite being told clearly that any information he divulged would be used against him.

The gruesome assault in Kasur town, located a short distance from the border of India, led to the setting up of a special task force which traced the rapist, 24-year-old Imran Ali, using DNA samples.

The prosecutor submitted a list of 56 witnesses before the court. "He will be tried in these cases separately", he said, adding this was the first ever trial in the history of Pakistan that concluded in four days. Qadir has indicated that way Ali should be executed is not part of ruling and has explained that defendant has 15 days to appeal court decision.

"Imran even today told the court that he killed the eight girls", he told reporters.

Violent protests gripped the Kasur city following the minor's rape and murder that claimed two lives.

Mohammad Imran, a local man who knew Zainab's family, pleaded guilty to raping and killing the little girl, reports The Associated Press.

On January 9, a police constable recovered her body from a heap of rubbish.

The murder of 7-year-old Zainab Ansari sparked riots across Pakistan, with hundreds of people protesting against police negligence. His lawyer had withdrawn from the case after Imran confessed.

Zainab was kidnapped while she was walking from her house to her Quran studies class on 4 January.

The trial was held in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat prison for security reasons and only relatives of the victim were allowed inside the court.

It was revealed that Imran was initially booked on suspicion of involvement in the rape and murder of Zainab but was later released after his DNA samples were collected by the police.
