Palestinians to ask Putin to step into peace process

Speaking to the Israel Hayom newspaper, President Trump has made comments all but unheard of among top USA officials, openly questioning whether Israel "is genuinely seeking to reach a peace agreement with the Palestinians".

In an interview with the right-wing daily Israel Hayom, Trump weighed in on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, saying neither side appears willing to reach an agreement.

The unilateral United States decision to declare Jerusalem as the capital of Israel was challenged at the UN General Assembly where 128 nations, including India, voted to turn down the move as "null and void".

"Right now, I would say the Palestinians are not looking to make peace". Pressed on whether he wishes for the Israeli prime minister to emerge without a criminal charge, Adelson replied: "I wish for peace. They are not looking to make peace", Trump said in the interview with Israel Hayom. But Israel also faces political isolation internationally over its occupation of the Palestinian territories and does not have diplomatic ties with most countries in West Asia.

Relations between the USA and the Palestinians have spiraled since Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital in December.

USA foreign aid in the Middle East and in Afghanistan is different from war spending, although Trump has often appeared to conflate them.

Unilateral steps aimed at imposing Israeli control over settlements on Palestinian land will not alter the reality that settlements are illegal, the Palestinian Presidency stressed on Monday.

On January 14, Abbas said that Trump's so-called Middle East peace efforts are the "slap of the century" after his recognition of Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel's capital.

"I would say I understood that was going to be their decision".

The Trump administration has announced a major cut in aid to the Palestinians this year, notifying the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees last month that it would withhold $65 million of a planned $125 million installment.

Putin mentioned the call with Trump at the start of his meeting with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas on Monday.

Jarrar allegedly killed Israeli settler Raziel Shevah in a drive-by shooting near a Jewish-only settlement adjacent to Nablus, a Palestinian city in the northern West Bank, on January 9. "In December, he recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital, without securing concessions from Israel in return", Chris Meserole, a Middle East expert at the Brookings Institution, told Newsweek.

More than 600,000 Jews live in around 140 settlements which are considered illegal under worldwide law and were built since Israel's occupation in 1967 of the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Trump, in one of his tweets, also accused the Palestinians of not showing enough "appreciation or respect" to the U.S. after he had taken "the toughest part of the negotiation off the table".
