Clemson projected as No. 3 seed in NCAA tournament

This is the second straight year the selection committee has released a preview of the bracket. The show only projected the top four seeds in each region. Despite Michigan State's two top-five wins, it has only a 3-2 record in its "Quadrant 1" games, against top-30 teams at home, top-50 teams at neutral sites and top-75 teams on the road.

Virginia may not be the No. 1 team in the nation when the Associated Press poll is released on Monday, but the Cavaliers are No. 1 where it counts. "They've had a great strength of schedule". But what else has Virginia Tech done to warrant inclusion in the NCAA Tournament field?

The committee rated Michigan State a No. 3 seed in its midseason bracket reveal on Sunday afternoon.

The Blue Devils were widely thought to be a strong candidate for a No. 1 seed before last Saturday's stunning loss to St. John's, and the defeat against the Tar Heels Thursday night made matters worse.

Midwest: 1. Xavier, 2. No other conference had more than three teams. Meanwhile, Virginia Tech jumped to 56th from 67th, upgrading its chances of earning a tournament bid. Sure, it would have been great for everybody, but that's a small thing.

Virginia leads the ACC race by two games in the loss column over Clemson (9-3) and resumes league competition Tuesday at Miami.
