Benjamin Netanyahu suggests Israeli police could implicate him in corruption probe

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu questioned the integrity of police probing corruption allegations against him after the police commissioner said a "powerful" figure had hired private eyes to spy on officers handling the cases.

Netanyahu is under investigation in three corruption cases, which have been dubbed case 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000 by police.

In 2014, Netanyahu met with the health minister of the Czech Republic and spoke about the possibility of exporting Israeli cannabis to that European nation.

However, the Attorney General will make the final decision on pressing charges.

"It is shocking to discover that the commissioner has repeated the mistaken and ridiculous suggestion that Prime Minister Netanyahu sent private investigators after the police who are investigating him", the post said. "Any sane person would look at these comments and ask how the police chief would be able to conduct an impartial investigation of the prime minister". "Instead of requesting that they wrap up the investigation as soon as possible, Netanyahu has chosen to attack the police commissioner, and by doing so, he is trying to dismantle peoples' trust in the legal system". The Saturday poll by Hadashot TV news also showed that up to 60 percent of Israelis want the Prime Minister to step down if police recommend indicting Netanyahu.

In the conversations, transcripts of which have been leaked in the Israeli media, Netanyahu allegedly discusses limiting the circulation of Yedioth Ahronot's major competitor in favor of more favorable coverage.

Netanyahu's allies have in the past said there is no crime in friends exchanging gifts, but investigators have reportedly arrived at the conclusion that they were in fact bribes. Only if he is convicted - and once any such conviction is upheld throughout the appeals process - would Netanyahu be forced to resign.

The feud comes as local media are reporting that police plan to recommend indicting the Premier as early as next week.

But Netanyahu hit the pause button after being presented with data from Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan regarding the "spillover of medical cannabis into the recreational market", Haaretz Newspaper reported.
