Gunmen free suspected militant from Srinagar hospital

TWO gunmen opened fire today in a hospital in India-administered Kashmir where a Pakistani militant was brought for treatment, an official said, escaping with the high-profile prisoner and killing a police officer in the daring assault.

Jhutt, along with five other detainees from Srinagar Central Jail, was taken to hospital on the advice of the jail authorities, police said.

The police are on the lookout for the LeT man -Mohammed Naveed Jat - but they're even more anxious about a possible inside job. A soon as the trio reached a narrow lane, terrorists opened fire on both policemen and ran away with the prisoner. The police sources said that during the preliminary investigation it was learnt that Naveed himself snatched Carbon rifle from a policeman and opened fire.

Shots were fired inside a prominent hospital in Jammu and Kashmir's capital Srinagar this morning, killing two police constables.

The prisoner who escaped, Naveed Jat (alias Abu Hanzullah), is a 24-year-old Pakistani national and alleged LeT cell commander in Kashmir, whom officers had escorted for a routine medical check-up, a local deputy police chief said. Babar Ahmad succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.

According to police, Jat's escape is expected reactivate the LeT's vast network, which has remained dormant after the death of Abu Qasim, Abu Dujana and Abu Ismail.

One cop died while another was left injured in the incident, said a senior police official. He said that in the months of October-November 2012, Naveed Bhatt along with seven other highly trained Pakistani terrorists were launched to Valley from Athmuqam Farkian in Kupwara Sector. The terrorists are also known to get "wazwan" (Kashmiri cuisine) in the jail.

The accomplices had ambushed the police team escorting "hardcore" Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist Mohammed Naveed Jhatt, inside the busy SMHS hospital complex.

Meanwhile, in a press release issued here, the police said that a wreath laying ceremony of the slain Head-Constable Mushtaq Ahmad resident of Dildar Karnah and Constable Babar Ahmad Khan resident of Shangus Achabal was held at District Police Lines (DPL) Srinagar.
