Rumour: This year's Call of Duty will be Black Ops IV

This all needs to be taken with a grain of salt, as we need to wait on official news from Activision regarding the future of the series.

Previously, analyst firm Cowen & Company predicted that the developers over at Treyarch will continue the "Black Ops" subseries by releasing the next "Black Ops" game this year, GameSpot reported.

What's less clear is where the franchise will go next. That much was certain before Tuesday, but a new report from Eurogamer indicated 2018's installment of the massively popular shooter series will take fans back to a universe they have experienced three times before.

We discussed Call of Duty on the Nintendo Switch, on, our weekly gaming and pop culture podcast. Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games have also worked on Call of Duty titles in the past although Treyarch has always led production of Black Ops games.

Information about Black Ops 4 first surfaced online this week in a Twitter post by "industry insider" Marcus Sellars. We know the game will be more "grounded" but we're unsure what era it's set in.

It is also not known which platforms the game will reach, but it is estimated that the title will release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Activision's annual return to the Call of Duty franchise has been relatively uninterrupted and 2018 appears to be sticking with the schedule.

Each November for over a decade now, publisher Activision has dropped a new Call of Duty game on the market.

Though Black Ops 3 had a fantastic multiplayer mode, its main campaign left something to be desired.

KitGuru Says: Given that Treyarch is at the helm this year, I wouldn't be surprised to see Black Ops 4.
