Turkey's General Staff: Nearly 900 terrorists killed in Operation Olive Branch

A previous statement said one serviceman was killed and another wounded in that attack.

The operation is being carried out under the framework of Turkey's rights based on global law, UN Security Council resolutions, its self-defense rights under the UN charter, and respect for Syria's territorial integrity, it said.

Kilis Governor Mehmet Tekinarslan said three rockets had landed in the border province of Kilis on January 2, injuring three civilians; one of them is in critical condition.

In a later statement, it added a Turkish army tank had been hit in another attack, killing all five servicemen inside.

Immediately after the attack at Sheikh Haruz, an air operation targeting terrorist shelters, hideouts and weapon emplacements in the area was launched at 5.52 p.m. local time (1452GMT).

Another soldier, the Turkish military said, was killed in clashes with the Kurdish forces.

Thousands of Kurds protested on Saturday outside the Council of Europe in Strasbourg over Turkey's offensive against a Kurdish militia in northwestern Syria. "We have given the necessary response instantly, and we continue to do so", Yildirim said. The rights group said most families exhaust all their resources paying smugglers anywhere from $300 to $8,000 per person to reach Turkey.

But the YPG has been working closely with the United States to fight the Islamic State extremist group in Syria.

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron discussed Turkey's ongoing Operation Olive Branch in Syria's northwestern region of Afrin over the phone, Turkish media reported.
