No fly zone - this 'emotional support' peacock is denied boarding U.S. plane

According to travel blog Live and Let's Fly, a passenger wanted to bring her "emotional support" peacock onto the plane, even offering to pay for a ticket for her avian companion.

However, a spokesperson for United explained to Fox News that the airline told the customer she couldn't bring the peacock on board.

They added the bird "did not meet guidelines for a number of reasons, including its weight and size".

Needless to say, the peacock couldn't fly.

After it was shared online, many people raised interesting questions about maintaining a balance between animal care and safety of the flyers on Twitter.

The people who reached Newark International Airport to board the flight was in for a surprise.

The woman was identified as conceptual artist Ventiko who said in a separate interview that she adopted the bird after using it in a performance art piece in 2014. However, Dexter was turned away due to health and safety concerns.

Other airlines have recently started cracking down on the usage of emotional support animals: Delta has announced stricter regulations about allowing pets on flights.

The United Airlines incident comes after Delta released a statement on January 19 announcing new requirements when it comes to emotional support animals.

According to Delta airlines, it carries approximately 700 service or support animals daily - almost 250,000 annually. The carrier claims the policy change, which starts in March, was made in response to growing complaints of untrained animals biting customers and urinating inside the airplane. While other airlines have not published similar figures, the Department for Transport' reports on disability-related complaints show that between 2012 and 2016 those involving service animals almost quadrupled. "United is dedicated to providing convenient and comfortable service to all of our customers". She further informed that the airport authorities in such cases require documentation from a medical professional and at least 48 hours advance notice. Because most airlines are concerned that certain passengers are simply abusing the policy and finding loopholes in the system. Snakes, other reptiles, ferrets, rodents, and spiders certainly fall within this category of animals.
