In SOTU Response, Kennedy Accuses Trump of Dividing US

Kennedy, the red-haired son of former Rep. Joe Kennedy II, D-Mass., was elected to the House in 2012, returning the family to Congress two years after the retirement of Rhode Island Rep. Patrick Kennedy, who is the son of Joe Kennedy III's great-uncle Ted.

Despite his disagreements with the current administration, Kennedy has said his response will not be anti-Trump. Because the strongest, richest, greatest nation in the world shouldn't leave any one behind.

After President Trump's State of the Union address, Rep. Joseph Kennedy struck a very different tone from that of the president in delivering the Democratic Party's response.

Kennedy, the grandnephew of the country's 35th president John F Kennedy, also touched on civil rights issues, activist movements like "Me Too" and Black Lives Matter and criticised several of Trump's policies over the past year.

"It would be easy to dismiss the past year as chaos". "Obviously, he comes to the table with a political pedigree as well as charisma", she said of Kennedy, who is now serving his third term in Congress.

Kennedy, 37, a three-term congressman and grandson of former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, has urged Democrats to focus on the economic worries of working-class voters who bolted the party in the 2016 elections. "As if the mechanic in Pittsburgh, the teacher in Tulsa and a daycare worker in Birmingham are bitter rivals rather than mutual casualties of a system forcefully rigged towards those at the top".

Kennedy, who made his national debut with this speech, then pivoted to a unifying, positive Democratic message.

"Here is the answer Democrats offer tonight: We choose both", he replied. We will fight for you. He even broke out some Spanish when talking about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. "Vamos a luchar por ustedes y no nos vamos alejar", he said. "You are part of our story". We will fight for you. "We will not walk away" - first, followed by the Spanish.

A former Peace Corps volunteer, Kennedy was an assistant district attorney in two MA districts before being elected to Congress. In one such video, Kennedy called the GOP's efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare "an act of malice".

Yet the young congressman failed to mention that generations of Kennedys preceding him have enjoyed the protections and sanctity provided by walls and extra security at compounds stretching from Cape Cod to Palm Beach.

"Bullies may land a punch", Kennedy said. "They pull for their city", he said.
