Australia wins men's, women's titles at Sydney Sevens

However the last Pool match between the Sevens giants was the match of the day and played at a frenetic pace with Fiji scoring after the final whistle to beat New Zealand 19-17.

Australia also won the women's final beating NZ 31-0.

Australia is chasing its first World Series title since 2012, having finished fourth and second in the last two Sydney campaigns.

Australia has steamrolled New Zealand in the Sydney Sevens women's final claiming a 31-0 win.

All Blacks lost to Australia 24-12, while Fiji stunningly lost to U.S. 24-7 in the other main Cup quarterfinals to drop to fifth place play-offs.

Australia mantained its flawless weekend record this morning with a 29-0 quarter-final victory over Spain with Cherry again on the try-scorer's list.

Australia's women went through the tournament without conceding a try, a first in the Women's Sevens Series.

Aussie womens coach Tim Walsh called for the tournament to a model for all others to follow and grow the womens world series, and Kiwi superstar Portia Woodman backed his calls by saying New Zealand - and others - should copy Sydney.

Australia broke the final open with two tries in the shadows of halftime on Sunday, the second coming via James Stannard from kick-off after the siren to build a 14-0 lead.

If Australia are in the match, we'll have a live blog of it here.

The first half belonged to the Australians as they had all of the ball.

The South Africans will still climb the log with their second place finish in Sydney, especially seeing as their closest rivals, New Zealand, England and Fiji do not progress to the Cup semi finals.

The rest of the half was intensely fought, and the hosts held out New Zealand on their line for much of it.

"There's a commercial push, not just a moral desire to get the women out there, a commercial belief that it's good for business".

Early defensive pressure from Australia led to the first try, Emilee Cherry crossing in the left corner despite some resilient Russian defence.

"It's a great way to start 2018 and we're looking forward to the Commonwealth Games and then the World Cup in San Francisco".
