Billionaire Saudi prince freed after two months in detention

Saudi officials are yet to confirm his release.

The allegations against Prince Alwaleed include money laundering, bribery, and extorting officials. I'm so comfortable, I'm so relaxed. Authorities were still holding 95 people, he said. I shave here, like at home.

"I told the government I'd stay as much as they want, because I want the truth to come out on all my dealings and on all things that are around me".

In late December, the Wall Street Journal revealed that Saudi authorities had ordered Prince Al Waleed bin Talal to pay at least United States dollars 6 billion in exchange for his freedom.

The arrest of Prince Alwaleed, who is, like Prince Mohammed, a grandson of the kingdom's founder, sent shock waves through the worldwide business community, which had seen Prince Alwaleed as one of the more open faces of the normally private kingdom. "There are just some discussions between me and the government", he said in the interview, conducted shortly after midnight.

The prince has significant share holdings in Twitter and major financial institutions, and his net worth is believed to be around 17 billion dollars. He gave the interview partly in order to disprove such rumours, Alwaleed said.

The company - in which the prince has a 95 per cent stake - owns The Savoy in London, the Fairmont Plaza in NY and the George...

"The attorney general has approved this morning a settlement that was reached with Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, and the prince returned home at 11:00am", the official told Reuters without providing details. Since then, however, many others had been released, including Waleed al-Ibrahim, owner and chairman of Dubai-based Middle East Broadcasting Center (MBC), which is the Arab world's leading satellite television network.

He was the most prominent person among those arrested when several of the country's most powerful princes, businessmen and government officials, among others, were swept up in an anti-corruption raid in early November and placed under house arrest at the Riyadh Ritz-Carlton.
