Theresa May to meet Donald Trump in Davos

US President Donald Trump will be entering something of a lion's den when he visits the elitist enclave of Davos next week, rubbing shoulders with the same "globalists" that he campaigned against in winning the 2016 election.

The comments assume significance in the wake of several leaders expected to talk about various risks facing the world, including those from economic protectionism and differences amongst various world powers. This is the second year in a row that Ramaphosa will be heading the delegation.

Despite Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa's optimism that he might win back the hearts and minds of foreign investors in Davos, Switzerland, a political analyst says his efforts could fail because of uncertainty about President Jacob Zuma's future.

Over 3,000 world leaders from business, politics, art, academia and civil society will attend the 48th World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting over the next five days in the small ski resort town on snow-covered Alps mountains, where the Indian presence will be the largest ever with over 130 participants. Tunisia's president, the 91 year-old Beji Caid Essebsi will also be the oldest person attending this year.

Speaking at a pre-WEF business breakfast for government and business on Thursday, Ramaphosa told delegates that: "The overriding concern leading up to WEF was political uncertainty".

Ramaphosa also said that in order for South Africa to have an economic recovery, job creation, inequality and poverty would need to be addressed. European governments now fear a "race to the bottom" on corporate tax rates and a shift to more investment in the United States by some of their big companies. "We now have the opportunity to move that forward in a coherent direction", Cohen said.

"It is an extremely quick trip", said one Trump administration source, adding that the president would only be spending "a very short amount of time" at the event. The latter believes it is critical to use WEF Davos as a platform to showcase Africa's economic potential. He said South Africa is in crisis and it will hard for the delegation to present a plan to the world.

The authors said similar narratives had also emerged in other countries and regions but did not name them. What do we want to sell?
