745kg of cocaine hidden in pineapples seized by Portuguese and Spanish police

Nine gang members have been arrested after police seized hundreds of kilograms of cocaine disguised in fresh pineapples, Business Insider reports. Police finding these illegal fruits in shipping containers is the conclusion of an ongoing investigation by Spain and Portugal that began back in April 2017.

Six police records showed that two hydraulic presses, three packaging machines, and over 400,000 Euros in cash were among the things found in the raids. Authorities say the smugglers would pack the cocaine into a cylinder shape, cover it in yellow wax and then place it inside of a hollowed out pineapple.

Investigators said the drugs were smuggled as part of an operation run by a pair of Colombian brothers who operated laboratories near Madrid, the Spanish capital. Apparently, the gang had the cocaine stored in Terrassa, Barcelona and transported it to Madrid laboratories every 15-20 days.

Aside from the more than 1,600 lbs of cocaine seized, police also dismantled a laboratory where the drug was cut with additives.

Portuguese investigators told Global News in a statement that "this organised worldwide group had repeatedly brought large quantities of cocaine to the European continent".

The pineapple shipment had arrived in Lisbon with an intended delivery address in Spain, police said.

This weird shipping method has been used before by drug smugglers.

The Iberian peninsula is a major entry point to Europe for cocaine and other drugs.
