Lebanon orders ban on Spielberg's 'The Post'

Lebanese authorities have banned Steven Spielberg's latest film, the political thriller "The Post", an official said on Monday.

There is no incongruity in seeking to enforce laws restricting contact with an enemy power, said Samah Idriss, a founding member of the Campaign to Boycott Supporters of Israel in Lebanon, which promotes the laws banning contact with Israelis.

Lebanon and Israel remain at war after a 2006 conflict which lasted a month and killed hundreds of Israeli soldiers and fighters for the Shiite militant group Hezbollah.

The film, starring Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks, tells the story of the Washington Post's efforts to publish the Pentagon Papers, classified documents that revealed the failures of the USA war in Vietnam. Jungle, starring Daniel Radcliffe, was also banned a year ago, two weeks after its release, due to the social-media buzz surrounding the survival thriller, which features an Israeli protagonist.

The commercially successful Wonderwoman was banned because it starred Gal Gadot, who served the Israeli military.

The spokesman noted that, following "Schindler's List", other Spielberg movies have been regularly released in Lebanon.

The Hollywood giant was blacklisted by the Cairo-based pan-Arab body after he donated $1 million to Israel during the 2006 war between the Jewish state and Lebanon.

The film will be released on January 18th in Lebanon. "We think that notwithstanding the fame and the importance of Steven Spielberg, for the sake of our martyrs and for the sake of Lebanon, our national dignity is more important than any creative elements connected to this film". It seems that anything remotely connected to Israel can get banned in Lebanon.

The description of "The Post" on IMDb read, "A cover-up that spanned four U.S. Presidents pushed the country's first female newspaper publisher and a hard-driving editor to join an unprecedented battle between journalist and government".

Lebanon also banned a movie by French-Lebanese filmmaker Ziad Doueiri in 2013, named The Attack, for using the shooting location of Tel Aviv and employing Israeli actors in the main roles. ". This is a great day for freedom of expression in Lebanon".
