Bannon Attorney Relayed 'Topics' To White House-Not Questions

Former Donald Trump advisor Steve Bannon Tuesday refused to answer questions from a congressional committee probing the president's campaign links to Russian Federation, saying he was under orders from the White House not to.

Former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon plans to "fully cooperate" with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe, according to Axios, after frustrating lawmakers by invoking executive privilege on Capitol Hill.

Steve Bannon, Donald Trump's former chief strategist, has become embroiled in the Russian Federation investigation, sparking anger at his refusal to answer questions in Congress, but experts warn he may find it harder to avoid offering evidence when he appears before a grand jury.

Bannon, who served as President Donald Trump's chief strategist until he departed the White House in August, could end up being interviewed by Mueller's team before the end of the month, according to one source who agreed to discuss the matter on the condition of anonymity.

Bannon also reportedly told Wolff that Mueller's Trump-Russia probe could ultimately result in charges related to money laundering.

Bannon appeared before the House committee Tuesday, where he was questioned for 10 hours on a range of issues concerning Donald Trump's campaign, transition team and White House operations, according to AP.

Schiff and Conaway confirmed that Bannon and the White House didn't specifically assert executive privilege to avoid answering questions, but rather suggested that some of the answers could potentially infringe upon executive privilege.

A White House official said the White House counsel's office had a conversation last week with committee counsel about Mr Bannon's testimony and was told the questions were expected to be about the election campaign.

Tensions rose after Bannon informed the committee Tuesday he would refuse to answer questions in their closed-door meeting.

Mr Bannon apologised a few days later, but was stripped of his job leading the pro-Trump news site Breitbart News. Once redirected, the agents sent the order to Burck, who is also representing two other witnesses in the probe being led by special counsel Robert Mueller, a former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Schiff said it's "completely unacceptable to have a witness come before us and decide for purposes of today's interviews these whole categories of questions we're placing off-limits".

Bannon did not respond to requests for comment. CNN reported Wednesday that Bannon had stuck a deal with the special counsel to submit to an informal interview in place of testifying. "Of course I authorised the subpoena", said the California Republican. He was also slapped with a new subpoena on Tuesday from the committee itself, according to Rep. Mike Conaway, the Texas Republican leading the committee's Russian Federation probe, and committee chairman Rep. Devin Nunes, R-California, who still signs off on subpoenas.

Mueller's subpoena, which was issued last week, could be a pressure tactic to induce Bannon to cooperate fully with his investigation.

Bannon's appearance Tuesday before the House panel perplexed and frustrated investigators, according to people familiar with the session.
