Venus Williams among those exiting early in Australia

Her last match against Venus Williams came in the third round of the 2015 US Open. She returned on a roll, winning the next six points to hold serve and then clinch the set.

Bencic broke Williams' serve in the final game of the match, winning the last four points. "I just have to give her credit".

Williams' older sister Venus was among the first-round casualties as the first seven American women in action at Melbourne Park all crashed out at the first hurdle.

Bencic warmed up for the tournament by combining with Roger Federer to win the Hopman Cup for Switzerland.

The seventh-seeded Ostapenko is playing her third Australian Open - she advanced to the third round past year. They were nearly twice as old as their opponents, Bencic and Jelena Ostapenko, who are both 20, and both were made to look inadequate.

The roofs were also closed at Margaret Court Arena and Hisense Arena, forcing play to be suspended for about 15 minutes at each stadium.

But the most prominent American to fall was the fifth-ranked Williams, who reached the finals of the Australian Open and Wimbledon previous year in addition to the U.S. Open semifinals.

US Open champion Sloane Stephens takes on China's Zhang Shuai while American big-hitter CoCo Vandeweghe, a semi-finalist past year at Melbourne Park and Flushing Meadow, opens her account against Hungary's Timea Babos.

"Just happy to be back playing".

Bencic's victory was not a total shock since she is a former top 10 player and has been on a hot streak since returning from injury last autumn. Since beating Madison Keys in the U.S. Open final, Stephens has lost eight matches.

Venus Williams was knocked out of the Australian Open on Monday, one of seven American women eliminated on opening day. Like I said, this year, it's a new year, only the second tournament of the year.

Other American ladies losing included Sofia Kenin who lost to No. 12 seed Julia Goerges, CiCi Bellis who fell to No. 30 seed Kiki Bertens, Alison Riske wholost in three sets to Kirsten Flipkens, and Taylor Townsend to No. 19 seed Magdalena Rybarikova.

"Last year is last year", Williams said. Serena, 36, became the oldest woman to win a Grand Slam tournament in the Open era and did it while she was pregnant - so how important is age, especially in a game that does not involve body contact?

French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko got her Australian Open campaign off to the flawless start, beating Italy's Francesca Schiavone in straight sets.

Vandeweghe received two code violations during her loss, the first when she refused to restart play at the end of the first set until she was brought bananas.

Williams departed for a bathroom break and, seemingly refreshed, struck back at the start of the second, breaking Bencic's opening service game.

Even though she lost her first-round match a year ago here against Serena, Bencic's recent success had her confident going into Monday's opener against Venus.

Bhambri is yet to win a round in the main draw of a Grand Slam and the Australian Open is the only Major he has played.

Also bundled out in the women's draw are Ekaterina Makarova, who was World No. 8 in 2015 and Francesca Schiavone, the 2010 French Open champion.

It also continued a bleak day for the United States, with three of their four women's semi-finalists from Flushing Meadows past year falling at the first hurdle.

Zhang Shuai on Monday.
