Palestinians to 'Slap Back' for Trump Jerusalem Move, Abbas Says

Since US President Donald Trump's December 6 recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, there have been violent protests every Friday in the West Bank and Gaza, although their size has shrunk in recent weeks. "Israel killed them", Abbas said in Ramallah, according to Haaretz.

"Our eternal capital is Jerusalem, and we will not accept what is being offered to us to make Abu Dis the capital of Palestine instead of the city of Jerusalem", Abbas said, confirming reports that the White House had offered the Jerusalem suburb Abu Dis to the Palestinians as an alternative capital to a potential future state.

Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas blasted Trump for his handling of Mideast peace efforts.

During the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly said his administration would make the "ultimate deal" by brokering a peace agreement between Israelis and Palestinians.

"We are committed to resolving the two states on the basis of worldwide legitimacy, the Arab peace initiative, and the state of Palestine on the 1967 borders", he said.

Beyond that, Abbas attacked the U.S. ambassadors to Israel and the United Nations, David Friedman and Nikki Haley, calling them a "disgrace". "There is nothing more important than Jerusalem".

Israel says it would welcome the United States as a mediator but a US bid to revive negotiations, led by Trump's adviser and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, has so far shown no progress.

Abbas said "shame on you" for Trump's claim that the Palestinians refuse to negotiate.

A decision is expected by Monday, a person said.

Trump has drawn rebuke for recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

"The meeting will be held in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, which means that senior Hamas officials won't be able to attend", he said.

Even so, Abbas reaffirmed his commitment to a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The tunnel also extended from under Israel's Kerem Shalom border terminal into Egypt's Sinai peninsula, an Israeli military spokesman said.
