Over 1000 young people charged by Danish police for sharing sex film

Danish authorities are bringing distribution of child pornography charges against more than 1,000 people who shared a sexually explicit video involving a 15-year-old girl and several underage boys via Facebook.

Despite the legal age of sexual consent in Denmark being 15, they said the videos could be considered child pornography.

Police inspector Lau Thygesen of Nordsjælland's Police said: 'This is a big and complex matter and has taken a long time to investigate, not least because of the large number of suspects.

Denmark's National Cyber Crime Center said the case began past year when Facebook received reports that the sex videos were being shared on its Messenger chat platform.

Facebook told United States authorities and the case reached Denmark through Europol, the European Union's law enforcement agency.

All guilty parties will be forced to sign the Danish equivalent of the child sex offenders register, according to the police's press release.

"We have taken the case very seriously as it has had serious consequences for those involved because of how the material has been spread". North Sea Police then launched a co-ordinated investigation with Copenhagen authorities and the National Cyber Crime Center under the operation name, Umbrella.

"We want to give out a warning to young people: think about what you're doing", Kjærside told Bloomberg.

The circulation on social media of homemade sex videos involving children by their peers is an increasing problem for police forces around the world.

"It is our opinion that young people know that it can have major consequences for the victim to share that kind of material".

Numerous youngsters who share the footage are oblivious to the fact they are committing major criminal offences. If convicted, some of the young people could face prison time as well as restrictions from professions such as child care.

The majority of those charged shared the footage a couple of times, according to the police statement, but some shared the footage "hundreds of times" online.
