House votes to extend questionable NSA surveillance program for six more years

The measure extends the government's authority to collect communications from foreigners, without warrants, including those communicating with USA citizens, under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act's Section 702.

On Thursday afternoon, the U.S. Senate started considering the extension to the spy program with several Senators vowing to oppose the bill. In fact, on Wednesday evening, the White House Office of the Press Secretary released a statement that "urges the House to... preserve the useful role FISA's Section 702 plays in protecting American lives". Over 55 members of the Democratic Party voted against the amendment. The intelligence and security officials, however, said that there was no need to put restrictions towards the government if it intends to get access to information for any security reason.

"I think the underlying bill will pass".

"He just has concerns about other parts of FISA", he told reporters.

Those divergent responses prompted some members of Congress to question whether Mr Trump understood a controversial national security tool that was on the verge of being renewed.

The controversial decision came in the wake of the House rejecting bipartisan efforts to enforce privacy limits on the NSA, as well as contradictory tweets by President Donald Trump on Thursday morning, hours before the vote.

Napolitano claimed during the segment that Trump's "woes began" because the Obama administration supposedly conducted warrantless surveillance of the Trump campaign - although he presented no evidence to back up this claim.

A key vote in the House today split both Republicans and Democrats and some might say President Trump himself.

On Thursday, White House cyber coordinator Rob Joyce said there have "been no cases of 702 used improperly for political purposes". Happy to see that it passed the House today.

Almost two hours after his first tweet, Trump backtracked.

FISA Section 702 allows the U.S. government to pull in communications from foreign nationals but does not permit surveillance of United States citizens, even if they are suspected of criminality or terrorism. "We must reform our government surveillance programs to accomplish the dual goals of keeping our country safe and putting appropriate safeguards in place to protect the civil liberties of American citizens".

It is routine practice for the FBI to run searches through data collected pursuant to Section 702 even during the preliminary stages of an investigation, according to the article by Sharon Bradford Franklin, a senior fellow at New America's Open Technology Institute.

"The Bill of Rights requires that information be gathered under the 4th amendment with probable cause, and naming the person, naming the papers", Sen.

"I agree with Chairman Goodlatte that Section 702 should be reauthorized. It's what brings Republicans and Democrats together". This isn't about politics.
