China suspends Marriott website over geography gaffe

Marriott is in trouble again, this time, the South China Morning Post says, because one of its corporate Twitter accounts "liked" and shared a post congratulating the hotel group over listing Tibet and Hong Kong as independent countries.

"Cyberspace is not an extralegal place and multinational corporations should abide by relevant laws and regulations", China's Shanghai Cyberspace Authority reportedly said.

Marriott has said it was "deeply sorry" and wished to "reiterate our usual stand in respecting China's sovereignty and territorial integrity".

Several foreign companies in China have come under scrutiny for listing Taiwan and Hong Kong as countries - infuriating the Chinese government and patriotic netizens, to whom these areas are indispensable territories.

China's aviation authority meanwhile said it had asked Delta Air Lines to investigate why Taiwan and Tibet were listed as countries on its website, and demanded an "immediate and public" apology. USA -based Delta, Spanish clothing chain Zara and US medical device maker Medtronic were targeted, the Liberty Times reported.

"Political stance is the most important part of the brand awareness when foreign companies do businesses here", said Zhu Guangyu, a 44-year-old consumer from Shanghai. Marriott is operating 270 hotels with almost 100,000 rooms in China.

Marriott suspended the questionnaire and apologized.

Hong Kong and Macau are former British and Portuguese colonies, respectively, that are now "special administrative regions" under China. Both believe that the government of the other is illegitimate, as there is only one China (mainland and Taiwan), with each of them representing the legitimate administration.

The company apologized on Chinese social media platforms. "Unfortunately, twice this week, we had incidents that suggested the opposite", said President and CEO Arne Sorenson.

While formally the People's Republic of China and Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China, remains a single country as each considers the other as "renegade provinces", Beijing has repeatedly called it "the most sensitive issue" in its relationships with the United States.

Authorities in Beijing began an investigation yesterday into the language used by the American multinational company in a questionnaire sent to customers by email.
