Woman killed by pit bulls outside her home

A woman was killed and her husband seriously injured after a vicious mauling by two pit bulls on Christmas Eve in a Kentucky coal town.

The couple did not own the pit bulls, officials said.

Lorraine Brock Saylor, 66, was feeding the birds when she was viciously attacked by the pit bulls at her residence.

Johnny Saylor, Lorraine's husband came running out after hearing a commotion outside and that is when one of the dogs started attacking him.

According to a press release published on Facebook, the husband managed to shoot both dogs, but only one died.

He shot both animals, killing one and injuring the other, to fight them off but it was too late to save his wife. Authorities have asked residents in the Arjay community to be on the lookout for the injured brown dog. The other dog ran off near Country Lane.

'The dogs belonged to 42 year old Johnny Dale Lankford who was already lodged in the Bell County Detention Center on charges he acquired Friday afternoon December 22nd for assault 2nd degree - domestic violence, unlawful imprisonment - 2nd degree, and a bench warrant. It is not known who, if anyone, was watching over the dogs when they attacked the Saylors.

"Under no circumstances are you to engage this unsafe animal", they urged.

Lankford's two dogs which attacked the woman.

Emergency services were notified immediately, but Lorraine was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The ambulance kept trying to get him to go to the hospital but he wouldn't leave until I took her into our care", said Steele. The Bell County Sherriff's Department responded to a dispatch call and found the injured couple.
