Apple acquires augmented reality headset maker Vrvana

Vrvana is the second company after SMI in the field of AR and VR that Apple acquired this year.

The headset promises a seamless blend of augmented and virtual reality and also features inside-out tracking via infrared cameras and also does hand tracking for gesture control using the same cameras.

Vrvana is best known for the Totem, an as-yet-unreleased hybrid headset that mixes augmented reality and virtual reality technologies into a single "extended reality" device.

While camera-based mixed reality solutions have previously been criticized for featuring a nausea-inducing lag, the Totem nearly eliminates the problem with a lag that's been cut to only 3ms.

Rumors have been flying for some time that an Apple AR headset is in the works. Two sources familiar with the deal said Apple paid around Dollars 30 million for the company. Apple has neither confirmed nor denied the deal.

After the securing of the startup, numerous employees of VRvana have been moved to Apple's campus in Cupertino. The Vrvana site is now still up, but it stopped updating social accounts and news in August of this year. This acquisition clearly indicates what the company is hoping to develop.

Vrvana's camera-based AR approach differs from competitors like Microsoft, which is utilizing transparent, projection-based displays for its HoloLens headset.

As indicated by VRvana's, their prior headset was fit for showing completely opaque pictures on its OLED display, giving it a chance to change effortlessly from AR to VR. This could be one reason why Apple is taking the AR tech so seriously.
