North Korea was previously designated a state sponsor of terror in 1988, but was removed from the list in 2008 by former President George W. Bush.
The U.S. State Department now lists Sudan, Syria and Iran as nations that have "repeatedly provided support for acts of worldwide terrorism".

Trump accused North Korea of "repeatedly" supporting worldwide terrorism, "including assassinations on foreign soil".
The designation against North Korea will trigger additional sanctions.
The official added that the country "clearly fit the criteria for a state sponsor of terror in a previous administration".
