Russian Federation says U.S. providing cover for Islamic State in Syria

The Russian Ministry of Defense had to delete its posts.

Russia's military admitted Tuesday that footage it initially claimed showed cooperation between the USA and the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) in Syria actually originated from a computer game, but defended its findings with alternative evidence. Instead, it said, American forces interfered with Russian air operations, allowing ISIS to recover and redeploy.

Russia's Ministry of Defence has posted what it called "irrefutable proof" of the U.S. aiding so-called Islamic State - but one of the images was actually taken from a video game.

Shortly after the Russian defense ministry posted the photos, social media users quickly identified the fakes.

The images were taken from a video published online by the Iraqi military in June 2016, showing a joint US-Iraqi mission that attacked an ISIS convoy outside Falluja.

The military stood by its allegations saying "the refusal of U.S. command to inflict strikes on ISIL convoys on November 9 is an established fact recorded in the transcript of conversations".

"This is the irrefutable evidence that there is no struggle against terrorism as the whole global community believes", the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement posted on Facebook along with photos.

Moscow has previously accused Washington of "pretending" to fight IS in Iraq, allowing jihadists into neighboring Syria where Russian Federation and the United States have backed opposing sides in the bloody conflict.

The video game image seems to be taken from a promotional video on the game's website and YouTube channel, closely cropped to omit the game controls and on-screen information.

The Russian military is investigating claims that a civilian employee attached the bogus images, state-run media reported later Tuesday. "So, again that is pretty consistent with what we have seen come out of Russian MoD, as being baseless, inaccurate and you know, completely false", he said.

Coalition spokesman Col. Ryan Dillon called those claims, "about as accurate as their air campaign". Earlier this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin showed American filmmaker Oliver Stone video on his cell phone he claimed was recent video footage of Russian troops fighting the Islamic State.
