Trump launches national anthem petition in latest swipe at NFL

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said this week that "everyone should stand for the national anthem" but will not change the League's policy to require players to stand, as the NBA does.

The petition was launched on Thursday by the Trump Make America Great Again Committee, and is the United States president's latest move to target the wave of protests that has seen NFL players "take a knee" while the national anthem is played before games. The NFL stopped short of meeting Trump's desire that players be forced to stop protesting.

The Trump Make America Great Again Committee posted a petition Thursday on the GOP web site asking for signatures from supporters who believe in standing for The Star-Spangled Banner "to show your patriotism and support", first reported by The New York Daily News. "Stand for the National Anthem". It alienates too many patriotic people of good will who bristle at what they perceive as disrespect of the country's basic symbols.

On Tuesday, Mr. Goodell indicated that the league had not asked the players to stand up during the anthem. And we're going to continue to work on these issues within the community. And it's also for us to honor our flag and our country, and we think our fans expect us to do that. Stop listening to a president who calls these black players "sons of bitches".

The Trump campaign released a petition encouraging everyone to stand for the national anthem. Trump has expanded his target to include National Football League owners who do not mandate their players stand. Trump, Vice President Pence, the RNC, and many conservatives have wrongly claimed the protests are meant to dishonor America, America's military, the American people, or the American flag. "If there's anything that is disrespectful to the flag, then we will not play", Jones said earlier this month. Polls have found that a majority of Americans disapprove of the anthem protests but are unhappy with the way Trump has handled the issue.
