Texas men who chanted 'Heil Hitler' charged in shooting after Spencer speech

The lawsuit comes after an attorney for the university sent a letter Friday to Spencer associate and Georgia State University graduate student Cameron Padgett that said while the school "values freedom of speech", the request to rent space for Spencer represents a "substantial risk to public safety".

Police on Friday arrested three Texas men who were allegedly involved in a shooting that broke out right after white nationalist Richard Spencer's speech at the University of Florida. They have been charged with attempted murder. The other two assailants, brothers William Fears, 30, and Colton Fears, 28, encouraged Tenbrink to shoot at the protesters.

MI attorney Kyle Bristow had been threatening to sue Ohio State and the University of Cincinnati on behalf of Padgett if they refused to rent space for Spencer to speak.

The confrontation unfolded at around 5:30 p.m. Thursday, when the occupants of a silver Jeep stopped to argue with a group of protesters assembled near a bus stop, Gainesville police said. Mr. Tenbrink was arrested along with brothers William and Colton Fears.

Subsequently, Tenbrink fired one shot at the crowd and missed, hitting a business behind the victims and the three men got back into their vehicle and left the scene. Tenbrink is being held on a $3 million bail while the brothers' bails are $1 million each.

Gainesville Police Spokesman Ben Tobias said in a statement, "I am amazed that immediately after being shot at, a victim had the forethought to get the vehicle's license number".

"This incident and how quickly it was handled displays the true teamwork that went into yesterday's Unified Command Centre activation", said Alachua County Sheriff Sadie Darnell. Tenbrink, who was accused of firing the weapon, has a felony record and was also charged with illegal possession of a firearm. The investigation remains ongoing, Tobias said.

'It's always been socially acceptable to punch a Nazi, to attack people if they have right-wing political leanings, ' William Fears told The Gainesville Sun. We want to show our teeth a little bit because, you know, we're not to be taken lightly'.

The cost of security for Spencer's event was estimated by the University of Florida at $600,000. "He's trying to make it, normalize the idea for white people to have an identity, to advocate for their own interests and to advocate for our own existence", Fears said.
