A subsidiary Volvo introduced its first vehicle

"Polestar 1 is the first auto to carry the Polestar on the bonnet". The country is set to quickly become the world's largest market for hybrids and electric cars because of government mandates aimed at curbing pollution levels.

Volvo in-house tuner Polestar has been morphed into a standalone brand for high-performance electrified cars and on Tuesday we saw its first model, aptly named the Polestar 1, unveiled to the world in Shanghai.

"We want to be leaders in electrification", Volvo chief executive Hakan Samuelsson said at this week's launch event. On Thursday, the new Polestar revealed its future as a standalone electric performance brand. While the Polestar 1 won't likely be the sleekest, most lovely GT on the highway at any given moment, we think Polestar has done a good job of working Volvo's most stylish, modern design cues into a smaller, sportier package, creating a handsome performance flagship.

Also helping the Polestar 1 excel on twisty roads, the Öhlins Continuously Controlled Electronic Suspension system fits an electronic valve to each Öhlins shock absorber, monitoring driver inputs and road conditions and making adjustments within two milliseconds to provide precisely tailored suspension performance. Much of the Polestar 1 (about half) is based on Volvo's Scalable Product Architecture; the rest is entirely new technology developed by Polestar engineers working within Volvo's R&D department. Now under construction, it is due for completion in mid-2018. Polestar 3 will be an SUV-styled vehicle which will be priced between the Polestar 1 and Polestar 2 in terms of volumes and pricing.

All future cars from Polestar will have a fully electric powertrain.

Polestar 2 will start production later in 2019 and will be the first battery-electric vehicle (BEV) from the Volvo Car Group. Polestar will also move away from today's traditional ownership model. A maximum of 500 cars will be built per year and all those will be offered on a subscription basis. Production on that vehicle is expected to begin in 2019, and Volvo sees it serving as a direct competitor to Tesla's Model 3. The zero-deposit, all-inclusive subscription will also add features such as pick-up and delivery servicing and the ability to rent alternative vehicles within the Volvo and Polestar range, all incorporated into one monthly payment. The costs will include insurance and maintenance.
