Anatomy of a royal engagement: what are Harry and Meghan's next steps?

Harry's ex-girlfriend Chelsy Davy had to wait four years before she was introduced to the Queen (they finally met at Peter Phillips's wedding to Autumn Kelly) but the prince seems to be in a hurry to make things official with Meghan.

The Queen had only returned to Buckingham Palace two days earlier after enjoying her summer break.

Despite having been together just 18 months and only publicly addressing their relationship in September, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are sending fans wild with their "imminent" engagement.

The couple travelled there in a auto with blacked out windows and visited her private sitting room for an informal tea, The Daily Mail reports.

According to the publication, the pair arrived at the palace at around 5pm in a vehicle with blacked out windows, and were then whisked up to the Queen's private sitting room, where they spent the next hour talking to the royal matriarch. She told us Harry has had a girlfriend meet the queen before, but never this soon.

It was reported last week the 36-year-old quit her job with Suits. It is said to be the Queen's favourite time of day and it's a bonus when her grandchildren join her. An interview full of benevolence in which the word marriage has certainly been pronounced; the queen, with the humour that we know him, who may have urged the young couple to jump quickly not because of his great age.

Last month, Harry and Meghan made their public debut as a couple at the Invictus Games in Toronto, where they held hands at a wheelchair tennis event.

The meeting would make it the second time Meghan and her boyfriend's grandma have met, suggesting the pair are nearly certainly engaged.

ET spoke with royal correspondent Victoria Arbiter on Thursday, who gave us her thoughts on whether Prince Harry is ready to pop the question.

"She normally sits for half an hour eating from a selection of sandwiches, fruit or plain scones and cake", Kay said. "We're in love. I'm sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time".
