Hurricane Maria makes landfall on Dominicana

Dominica's Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit described Maria as "brutally" impacting the island. Central and southern Leeward Islands could see as much as 20 inches of rain, according to the National Hurricane Center. Some team members are from the same team that recently returned on Saturday from Puerto Rico.

Maria, which strengthened into a Category 5 storm on Monday night, is expected to hit Puerto Rico by Wednesday.

After that, Maria is expected to turn more to the northwest, then to the north-northwest by Friday. It had maximum sustained winds of 140 kph.

Hurricane Maria spaghetti models haven't changed since becoming a storm on Monday, which brings relief to people living in Florida, including Sebastian and Vero Beach, who are still dealing with the aftermath from Irma. But the strong winds associated with the hurricane are well off the coast.

The regional government of Guadeloupe tweeted early Tuesday to its residents: "Don't go out under any circumstances".

Hurricane warnings were posted for Guadeloupe, Dominica, St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, Martinique and St. Lucia. And as we saw with Hurricane Harvey, even a downgraded hurricane or tropical storm can cause massive destruction and chaos. In Puerto Rico, residents were also warned of the upcoming storm, which is expected to arrive in the area on Wednesday as a category 3.

US Virgin Islands and British Virgin Islands suffered severe damage from Irma and President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency for the US territories on Monday.

SURF: Swells generated by Maria are affecting the Lesser Antilles. The storm claimed at least three lives in Puerto Rico, at least four in the British Virgin Islands, and at least three in the U.S.

"Maria made landfall on Dominica around 9:15 p.m. ( 0115 GMT Tuesday ), after being upgraded to a category five hurricane, " the Center said.

First Coast Storm Experts have their eyes on the tropics and are reminding folks of the First Coast to always remain prepared during hurricane season.

Winds have swept off the roofs of several homes.

He warned that airports and seaports were likely to be shut for days.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 125 miles (205 km).
