Donald Trump shares video of himself hitting Hillary Clinton with golf ball

Trump also retweeted a Bloomberg Technology article published August 17 in which a financial analyst estimated that Twitter's market value would fall by up to $2 billion if the president were to stop tweeting.

The animated GIF image Trump retweeted spliced together footage of Trump taking a swing on a golf course with footage of Clinton tripping and falling as she boarded a plane in 2011 as secretary of state.

"Donald Trump's incredible golf swing #CrookedHillary", the tweet said, using a hashtag to reference the smear campaign against the former Democratic candidate for president.

"Crooked Hillary Clinton blames everybody (and every thing) but herself for her election loss", he said. The "deplorables" came back to haunt Hillary.

The president has previously taken to Twitter to retweet animations including one that depicted him pummeling a figure with a CNN logo superimposed on his head. "She spent big money but, in the end, had no game!". Clinton admits mistakes during the campaign in the book but gives a harsh account of factors she believes led to Trump's victory, including alleged interference by Russian Federation on his behalf and former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey announcement that investigators were looking at a new trove of emails related to Clinton.

The message sparked a backlash on social media, with detractors assailing Mr Trump for inciting violence against a political rival.

It comes as Mrs Clinton has released her latest book, "What Happened", which tackles the 2016 United States presidential election.

A senior Democrat, U.S. Representative Adam Schiff, said the retweet did not make him question Trump's recent outreach to Democrats but was disturbing.

The GIF was part of several creations the Twitter user had sent in response to a tweet from Trump about Clinton's newly released memoir "What Happened", which chronicles her account of the 2016 election.

"I have too little distance and too great a stake in it - instead this is my story".
