Hurricane Irma Could Leave 3.4 Million Floridians Without Power

Irma approached Naples on the state's west coast with maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour (195 kph), making it a unsafe Category 3 storm, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. The company said it has activated 20 temporary management sites and has prepared more than 13,500 workers throughout the state and especially South Florida to be ready to respond once it is safe to do so.

Florida Power and Light said on its website that more than half of those outages were in the Miami-Dade area, where about 600,000 people have been ordered to evacuate.

FPL said it had shut down one of Turkey Point's two nuclear reactors.

The same applied to the utility's nuclear plant in Jensen Beach. That is a decrease from the Category 5 designation Irma previously held.

More than 2,100 customers are without power Sunday in Brevard County, down from 3,000 earlier in the day.

"Once restoration begins in earnest, our goal is to get as many customers up and running as soon as possible and we will not stop until all power is restored", the company's statement said.

"This storm is unprecedented as far as strength and size".

"We estimate millions of customers will lose power as a result of Irma", Mr. Gould, the FPL spokesman, said Sunday, adding that crews likely need to set up hundreds of new poles and string thousands of miles of new line. Duke had mobilized roughly 8,000, including 1,500 from its own Midwest operations, while Tampa Electric had called in almost 6,000 workers.
