Hurricane Katia bears down on quake-rattled Mexico

The country has been dealing with twin national emergencies this week: at least a further 65 people had already been killed in an natural disaster, the strongest in decades.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says that Tropical Storm Katia is starting to stall over Mexico's Sierra Madre mountains.

The storm has deluged the mountainous region in Veracruz, which has a history of deadly floods and mudslides.

Hurricane Katia - one of three swirling south of the United States - strengthened to a Category 3 storm off Mexico's gulf waters, forecasters said Friday.

Mexican authorities are preparing for the impact of Hurricane Katia, which could affect over a million people as it rumbles towards the state of Veracruz from the Gulf of Mexico.

Katia is expected to produce rainfall of 10 to 15 inches over northern Veracruz, eastern Hidalgo, and Puebla, the National Hurricane Center said.

Hurricane Irma: Everything You Need to Know About This Monster Storm

Fluctuations in Hurricane Jose's intensity are possible for the next day or so, the National Hurricane Center said, and the storm is expected to gradually weaken after that.

It lost some strength before it landed about 115 miles (185 km) northwest of the port city of Veracruz as a Category 1 storm with sustained winds 75 mph (120 km/h). A hurricane warning means that it's expected to hit about 12-24 hours, the NHC noted in its update.

Hurricane Irma, which is Category 4, is on track to hit Florida after heading over parts of Cuba and the central Bahamas, according to the agency.

Almost 2,900 people have been evacuated from their homes in Veracruz, and 1,500 more relocated to storm shelters in the neighboring Puebla state, AP reports.

Meanwhile, Mexico is dealing with the aftermath of a powerful quake on Thursday night.

Many people remained in the streets, fearing aftershocks.
