Cabinet reshuffle talk gains momentum

Ahead of a speculated Cabinet reshuffle, Union Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy resigned from his post on Thursday evening.

It's no surprise that Rudy's resignation had come just days after the National Skills Development Corporation (NSDC) Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), a flagship scheme that is under the close watch of the prime minister's office, came under criticism for failing to achieve its targets.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley are also likely to attend the meet in Vridavan on Saturday.

Through the day, Mr. Shah met several ministers, some of whom have appeared on this list of those being asked to resign.

Birendra Singh and Sudarshan Bhagat are also on the list of those asked to resign.

Earlier in the day, Union minister Mahendra Nath Pandey was appointed Uttar Pradesh BJP president in place of Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, creating one more vacancy in the Council of Ministers.

Sources in the BJP said that a reshuffle may take place either on Saturday or sometime after the Prime Minister's return from China and Myanmar. He made it clear in an interview to NDTV that "the decision is not mine, it is the party's".

BJP president Amit Shah on Thursday held detailed consultations with the PM and it is understood that they have exchanged views on organisational "changes" that may revitalise the party before it goes into full-fledged election mode, in the run up to the 2019 general elections, sources said.

Janata Dal (United) MPs R.C.P. Singh and Santosh Kumar are also expected to join the government.

Talk of a reshuffle gained ground after Jaitley on Thursday hinted that he would not continue to hold the Defence portfolio for long. Former Union minister Venkaiah Naidu's urban development portfolio may be included in the rejig.

Besides Jaitley, three other union ministers are also holding additional charges of different ministries.

Union Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan is holding additional charge of the Environment Ministry following the death of Anil Madhav Dave in May. The Assembly polls are slated for later this year.
