Wildfire burns 5000 acres, forces hundreds of evacuations in California (PHOTOS, VIDEOS)

High winds and a weeklong, triple-digit heat wave across the area helped fuel its growth, according to the L.A. Fire Department.

The fire department says the blaze is burning on both sides of Interstate 210. The freeway was expected to remain closed through Saturday morning, officials said. No homes have been damaged and no injuries have been reported. In the Sunland-Tujunga area, homes on Reverie Road, Tranquil Drive, Inspiration Way, Hillhaven Avenue and Glen O Peace Parkway north of the 210 Freeway were evacuated as the fire continued to grow.

Hundreds of fire fighters were seen battling the blaze as the flames were spreading in four directions amid intense heat and wild winds.

The blaze was first reported around 1:30 p.m.in Sun Valley.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says the blaze about 70 miles (112 kilometers) north of Sacramento had consumed almost 6 square miles (15 square kilometers).

Evacuated streets included: Haven Way from Rolling Ridge Drive to the top of the hill, Olney Place, Ramey Place, Mystic View, Lamer Street from Brace Canyon Road to Keystone Street, Brace Canyon Road above Rolling Ridge Drive, Groton Drive and Hamline Place, east of Stephen Road, and the community of Castlean Estates and Stough Canyon Nature Center.

Garcetti said fire officials have "great confidence" they can defeat the fire, "with the exception if winds just pick up and go wild".

"The air quality is bad", said Burbank police Sgt. Derek Green, adding there has been no change in earlier evacuation orders.

The fire would be much easier to attack if the weather was not so "unpredictable", Terrazas said.

"These weather factors will result in the potential for rapid fire spread in the warned area through at least Saturday evening", the weather service said.

Cal Fire said on its website that the fire near Oroville had consumed almost 6 square miles (15 square kilometers) and was 30 percent contained. In other nearby neighborhoods, nervous residents packed up essentials but stayed near their homes and watched the flames with a mix of fascination and dread.

A lightning-sparked wildfire was burning within 16 miles of Burning Man but officials say there's no threat to the counter-culture festival underway in northern Nevada.

"We're not savages", James Tanker quipped.

For those affected, Sunland Recreation Center is being used as an evacuation center.
