Milwaukee County sheriff, Trump supporter David Clarke resigns

Clarke Jr has resigned his post as sheriff of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, according to the county clerk.

It's not immediately clear why Clarke resigned or what intends to do next.

Clarke submitted his resignation to the Milwaukee County clerk, noting in his letter that it would be effective as of 11:59 p.m. Thursday.

Gov. Scott Walker issued this statement, saying he will "move forward with the process of filling the vacancy as soon as we are formally notified of the resignation by Milwaukee County". I want to thank Sheriff Clarke for his decision to step down.

Although Clarke is himself black, he has also used racial slurs against black pundits who he disagrees with, once calling CNN commentator Marc Lamont Hill a "jigaboo".

Conservative groups have called on Clarke to challenge Democratic U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin in 2018, but he has rejected that suggestion.

A frequent Fox News contributor, Clarke has been a staunch supporter of President Trump's tough-on-crime and tough-on-immigration positions.

In May, Clarke claimed to have been offered a job with the Department of Homeland Security, although the agency never confirmed the offer. He later said he withdrew his name.

Clarke recently published a memoir, "Cop Under Fire". Clarke spoke at the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio.

Under Clarke, the Milwaukee County Jail has become the focus of an investigation following the deaths of four inmates in a six month period, including the death of a man who died from dehydration after the water in his jail cell was turned off for six days.

Clark has been sheriff of Milwaukee County since 2002 and spent more than two decades before that with the city's police department.
