Six killed, thousands stranded as floods swamp Mumbai

Schools and colleges were ordered to shut after more rain was forecast.

Residents in the city, home to the nation's central bank, stock exchanges and the Indian headquarters of Novartis AG and Citigroup, walked home, hitched rides on trucks or spent the night in their offices as the deluge evoked memories of the flooding in 2005 caused by a cloudburst that dumped three feet of rain on a single day, killing 570 people, grounding flights and cutting off rail and road links.

A 40-year-old and two children were killed when two houses in the northeastern suburb of Vikhroli collapsed on Tuesday, a police official told AFP.

After bearing the rain fury which brought Mumbai city to a standstill yesterday, the train services have been restored on most lines on Wednesday.

Meanwhile the Met department has said a "Red" warning has been issued for the next 24 hours for the city and adjoining areas, indicating there could be very heavy rainfall. "While water was receding, the speed was slow".

The city's dabbawallahs, who deliver hundreds of thousands of hot lunches from commuters' homes to offices every day, were also forced to stop delivery.

"Those ten teams are still on standby in Mumbai watching the situation, and as per requirement and in consultation with local authorities, we'll further review the situation and deploy it ( NDRF teams), and if need be, any operation can also be carried out", Kumar told ANI.

Mumbaikars who were stranded at several places like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Churchgate, Mumbai Central, Dadar and other stations, took trains and reached home safely.

"I had to stay the night at my office because train services were cancelled".

India's monsoon season runs from June through September.

Over recent weeks, more than 1,200 people have died across India, Bangladesh and Nepal in the worst floods to strike South Asia for years.

Catastrophic flooding in 2005 killed more than 500 people in Mumbai, and majority had been living in shantytown slums.
