Belgian F1 Grand Prix 2017 Qualifying: Lewis Hamilton Wins Pole Position

Mick Schumacher, 18, will honour the anniversary of his father's first grand prix win by driving the seven-time champion's title-winning Benetton here ahead of tomorrow's race. "I knew it was on the horizon and knew I'd get the 68th pole, but I haven't thought about it much".

"He was probably waiting for me to make a mistake and I didn't".

Mercedes continued to show they have the edge over Ferrari over a single lap, the team have secured the top spot in nine of the 12 meetings this season.

Speaking after qualifying, when asked about his new deal, Vettel said: "I am very happy to extend my contract with Ferrari. It is a very special feat that he achieved and I feel very proud to be up there with him".

"I know he doesn't want to be my team mate", Hamilton added with a smile.

"I think it's highly unlikely that he'll be here (at Mercedes)", triple champion Hamilton told reporters at the Belgian Grand Prix on Thursday, "and I don't think he wants to be my team-mate". He is looking primed to boss the race on Sunday and strike a major blow against his rivals, particularly Vettel, in the Championship chase. I didn't really find the rhythm the way I wanted to.

Max Verstappen, cheered on by a large army of Dutch fans who have made the journey across the border to Belgium, and his Red Bull team-mate Daniel Ricciardo finished fourth and fifth respectively, with Valtteri Bottas sixth.

A move to the Italian outfit would be a dream scenario for Mexican Grand Prix promoters, whose Formula One circuit is named after the late Ferrari drivers Pedro and Ricardo Rodriguez. "I love this team and I love the people I work with".

"I guess they (the stewards) wanted to see a race, so that's for sure the reason they did that because there was hardly any debris", he said.

"And I have now equalled him [Schumacher] on poles and it is very surreal".

"Normally we're a little bit ahead, and now Ferrari's ahead".

Hamilton lapped the circuit in just 1m 42.553s - the fastest ever at the track - and managed to beat Vettel, who was leading for most of the qualifying session by just 0.242 seconds. "We made good steps with the set-up right from the start, which is a really encouraging way to kick off the weekend".

"I think the exchange and communication is important, and Niki is our ambassador in that sense, and this might have happened around then".
