Trump is exactly what Republicans are not

Thom Tillis. A legislator who asserts his independence while President Donald Trump is in the White House does so at peril of getting rained on by the presidential precipitation known as a "tweetstorm".

Trump's tactics don't line up with the conventional presidential strategy of avoiding government shutdowns - or at least sidestepping blame.

Mr Trump's threat has also cast a shadow over congressional efforts to raise the country's debt ceiling and pass spending bills.

US President Donald Trump turned up the heat Thursday on Republican leaders in Congress accusing them of foot-dragging on his key priorities, in an intensifying feud that puts his policy agenda in jeopardy.

Speaking to a crowd in Phoenix on Tuesday, Trump said that he meant to keep his campaign promise about building a barrier on the border with Mexico.

"If we have to close down our government, we're building that wall", he said Tuesday in Arizona, referring to the physical barrier he promised to construct between the USA and Mexico.

Corker, the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, last week delivered a stinging rebuke of Trump after the president said "both sides" were to blame for the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

McConnell made similar comments earlier in the week at an event in Kentucky alongside Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who has also pushed for a debt ceiling increase. Andrew speculates that in attacking his own party, Trump could sabotage Republicans' 2018 chances - and having a Democratic majority in Congress would surely make things way more hard for the president.

Beyond the party leadership, the USA president has publicly attacked a string of Republican lawmakers - including senators John McCain, Jeff Flake, Dean Heller and Lisa Murkowski - at the risk of weakening his chances of driving legislation through Congress. She added that "anybody who is surprised by that has not been paying attention for two years".

The latest tweets from the president came a day after Trump and McConnell pledged to work together, even as there reportedly is tension between them.

During a feisty rally in Phoenix on Tuesday, Mr Trump warned he would shut down the government if Congress doesn't approve $1.6 billion in funding for his wall with Mexico.

And Trump criticized Obama's director of national intelligence, James R. Clapper Jr., who has publicly questioned whether Trump is fit to be president. After that, Congress would have to give permission for the government to borrow more money to meet its obligations.

Trump has openly courted challengers to oust Republican Sen.

Trump retweeted the series, titled "The Best Eclipse Ever!" from Twitter user, @JerryTravone.

Trump also lashed out at the media Thursday for reports about the different styles of his recent public speeches. The measure includes $784 million for 32 miles of new border fencing and $498 million for 28 miles of levee wall in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas; another $251 million would go to building back-up fencing in the heavily fortified San Diego area, AP reported.
