Russia FM confirms death of ambassador to Sudan

Russia's ambassador to Sudan, Mirgayas Shirinskiy, was found dead in his swimming pool Wednesday - the fourth Russian envoy to die in just eight months.

Russia's foreign ministry confirmed the news in a statement carried by state media.

Though there is no evidence to suggest anything suspicious about Shirinskiy's death, he is the latest in a long line of Russian emissaries to die in the past year.

"He was found dead in the swimming pool of his residence at 7:05 pm (16:05 GMT)", police spokesperson Omar al-Mokhtar told AFP.

Sergei Konyashin, the press secretary of the embassy in Sudan, told Rossiya'24 news channel the embassy staff had found Shirinsky with the manifestations of a heart attack.

Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday that staff at the Khartoum embassy called an ambulance but Mr Shirinsky "could not be saved". The body was taken to a morgue in a Khartoum hospital and procedures were initiated to send it back to Russian Federation.

The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs also released a statement mourning the death of the ambassador and said that Shirinsky has "taken true steps to better the relationship between Khartoum and Moscow".

Last December, Russian ambassador to Turkey Andrei Karlov was shot dead in Ankara by a Turkish policeman apparently in protest at Russian involvement in Syria.

Mr Shirinsky served in the Russian diplomatic corps for 40 years.

State news broadcaster Russian Federation 24 reports that Skirinskiy, born in 1954 and appointed to his position in 2013, died while swimming in his pool.
