Sensex ends 25 pts higher, Nifty up 6.85 points

BSE Sensex gained 148 points and NSE advanced 48 points to open at 31,919.17 points and 9,945.55 points respectively.

Market breadth was in the favour of gainers, with about 2 stocks advancing to every 1 stock that declining. The 31-scrip index was trading at 31,837.21 up 67 points or 0.21%, while the 51-scrip index surged by almost 28 points or 0.28% trading at 9,924.80.

Tata Global Beverages soared as much as 8.5 percent after announcing the foray of its water brand "Himalayan" into the USA market.

"Caution prevailed as a faster-than-expected rise in consumer price inflation in July reduced the chances of another interest rate cut by the Reserve Bank of India, which cut its main policy rate early this month by 25 basis points to 6 per cent, the lowest since November 2010", said Dhruv Desai, Director and Chief Operating Officer of Tradebulls. The Nifty FMCG index was trading 0.3 percent higher after rising 2.5 percent in the previous session. The IT sub-index of NSE closed 1.29 per cent higher.


Infosys was up by 3.19% at 1008 on the Sensex, while Reliance, Bharti Airtel and Dr. Reddy were the other top stocks in focus. Auto and healthcare shares too registered losses. Key benchmark indices oscillated around the flat line today to finally close the day with marginal gains.

On the Nifty, the stock gained 4.70 percent or 45.85 points to 1021 level and was the top traded share on the exchange in terms of volume. The IT major- Infosys shares were up over 3% in afternoon trade. This is also the second straight day when both markets closed in the green, supported by an across the board rally, reports said. The company said it will consider the share buyback at a board meeting on August 19.

GMR Infrastructure jumped 13.4% after India's Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a ruling of the Delhi high court that allowed Delhi International Airport Ltd, a unit of GMR Group, to put airport land to commercial use for non-aeronautical purposes.

Coal India, one of the worst performing stocks this year, rebounded 4.2% to 247.05 rupees, helped by an attractive dividend yield.
