Tree Topples in Central Park, Injuring 4

A woman and three children were injured after a tree fell on them in Central Park Tuesday morning, city officials said.

The Fire Department says it responded to the scene at West Drive near 62nd Street just after 10 a.m.

A spokesman for the FDNY said the mother hit her head trying to protect her children from the falling branches. "I have a son the same age as the 2 year old, so it was definitely heart-breaking to see this", mounted police officer Megan O'Leary said.

Anne Monoky Goldman, 39, bravely threw herself over her infant and two toddlers when the giant elm toppled on top of them about 10am Tuesday. It happened on the west side of the park near Columbus Circle.

Mom-of-three Anne Monoky Goldman broke her neck in the horror, while her 2-year-old son, Grant, suffered a fractured skull, a relative said.

One eyewitness who saw the Central Park tree fall on the mother said she lost consciousness for several moments.

It wasn't immediately clear if the children were injured, but all four were taken to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, Dwyer said. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition but has since been upgraded to stable condition, and is expected to survive. "She looked okay. She was talking when she went into the ambulance, they had to go and chainsaw her out, and they put her in the ambulance and she was talking", Johnsen said. The children were pulled out from under the tree's branches, but they did not appear to have any serious injuries, the witness said.

We will update as more information becomes available. Jamie Brown, 42, of Virginia told the New York Post: 'You heard the tree fall. then you hear a baby scream'.
