Stray bullet kills girl as police shoot at protesters

After keeping the world waiting for hours, Kenya's Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission finally declared President Uhuru Kenyatta victor of the country's disputed election. On Saturday (Aug. 12), Kenya's main Election Observation Group said its parallel vote tabulation matched the official tally from the national electoral commission.

The opposition earlier on Friday said it had asked for access to the commission's servers to confirm whether the alleged hacking took place, and it said it would accept the results even if they showed that Mr Kenyatta won.

An opposition leader James Orengo has said that Odinga and his party will not be taking their issues to court.

According to the acting president, President Kenyatta's re-election is a testimony to his leadership style and the giant strides he has taken in developing the east-African country in the last few years.

"We are aware of only six fatalities in which criminals, armed and acting with deadly intent, attacked police officers attempting to affect arrest resulting in fatal neutralization of the attackers", Kinoti said. "It's now time for us all to get back to work and move this country forward".

Following the announcement of results, hundreds of police in anti-riot gear were in the streets of the capital, Nairobi, amid fears of further protests by opposition supporters.

Later, Odinga visited another slum district, Mathare, where he met with the family of a 10-year-old girl, Moraa Nyarangi, who was killed when police fired at protesters.

Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan told political leaders in Kenya on Saturday to be "careful with their rhetoric and actions" and urged opposition leader Raila Odinga to pursue any complaints about the vote in court.

During a speech to about 4,000 supporters, Odinga said his followers should strike on Monday. I would like to thank all our supporters, staff, politicians, men and women who fought gallantly. To our competitors, we are not enemies.

"Raila Odinga has no right to declare a public holiday".

In 2007 an opposition coalition led by Odinga disputed the result after incumbent Mwai Kibaki was announced the victor by the electoral commission. The disputed election led to violent protests and targeted ethnic violence, killing about 1,100 people and displacing 600,000.
